ENDOCRINE NURSES SOCIETY
CLINICAL PROJECT OR
NURSING RESEARCH GRANT

The purpose of the grant is to support the development and implementation of either a clinical project or an independent nursing research study. Recipients are selected via a blind review process in accordance with the grant criteria. Outcomes of the grants are presented by the grantee at the Endocrine Nurses Society annual meeting in June.

Criteria

Applicants must be current members of the ENS. The award is intended to support a clinical project or nursing research study conducted by a registered nurse to address the clinical needs of endocrine patients. The duration of the grant is one year and grantees may apply for a second year extension grant. The ENS will expect the grant recipient to present an oral summary or poster depicting their work at the next annual meeting following completion of the project.

Grant Expectations

Recipients of awards are expected to meet the following obligations:

  1. File quarterly progress reports (First of October, January, and April). The timeline in the application should reflect this requirement.

  2. Present the outcomes via poster at the Endocrine Nurses Society (ENS) Symposium at the end of the grant year. Additionally, awardees must submit an abstract for the ENS newsletter. The expenses related to this presentation are the responsibility of the grantee and may be a percentage of the budget for the grant.

  3. Grantees may also submit a formal abstract through the Endocrine Society for presentation at the annual meeting, using the ENS category selection. Grantees are NOT precluded from applying for the ENS poster award. A formal abstract submission is NOT required as part of the ENS grant.

  4. Grantees are eligible to apply for a second (renewal) grant of one year to continue or amend the project.

  5. Preference for awards will be given to members not previously funded.

  6. Applicants must be members in good standing for at least 6 months prior to the grant and poster deadlines.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING SUBMISSION OF RESEARCH GRANT/POSTER

How can I get started?

Decide what you would like to do. Is there a question you would like answered or some particular facet of your practice that warrants further study? It starts with the first step. If you need help, just ask us! Starting a research project can be rewarding and fun. We want you to use the Endocrine Nurses Society as your springboard to an exciting research career!

What is expected of me?

If your project is selected (and we hope it is), you begin as you have outlined in your proposal. Every 3 months, you write a short update on the progress of the work. This can be done by email and does not need to be formal.

When will I learn if I am selected?

Preference is given to members who have not been previously funded. The blinded review is done after submission. A decision is made sometime in April and you will be notified prior to the annual meeting.

Do I need to attend the meeting to receive my Award?

You are not required to attend the annual meeting the year you receive your award. However, you are required to attend the annual meeting the following year to present a poster of your project. In addition, we ask that you write an abstract explaining the project for publication in our Newsletter following the annual meeting.

Can I use the award funds to go to the meeting?

You are allowed to budget travel to the annual meeting; however, the amount cannot be the largest part of your project budget.

Can I request an extension of my project?

You may request funding for an additional year if needed. You must submit another proposal following the same guidelines with the rationale for the extension and proposed outcomes. If no funding is requested, you may request additional time on a case by case basis through the Research Chair.

Do I need to submit my Grant/Research poster to the Endocrine Society?

We want to encourage everyone to submit a poster. The terms of the grant specify that the recipient present a poster of the completed project/study at the ENS annual meeting following the year of the award. There is no grant requirement that your poster be submitted to the Endocrine Society.

Can you explain the $500 Poster Award?

The poster award is separate from the Research grant. The poster award is given to defray the cost of travel and is selected from posters submitted formally through the Endocrine Society. The process is outlined on the Endocrine Society web site and abstracts must be submitted electronically. The category for this submission is “Endocrine Nursing.” Posters are reviewed by the Research Committee. The number of poster awards depends on the selection and the available funding. In order to submit an abstract through the Endocrine Society, you must be an Endocrine Society member or have a member sponsor your abstract. If you do not have an available sponsor, please let us know and we can arrange sponsorship.

Can I be awarded both a Research Grant and a Poster Award?

Yes! You may apply for a grant and also submit a poster for a poster award.
